Baume
” BAUME ” series by photographer Loris Theurillat delves into our intimate relationship with death, mourning, and oblivion, capturing with sensitivity the final stages of his grandmother’s life up to her passing.
Struck by successive bereavements, this reserved woman had to contain her pain and memories. Compelled to silence either by modesty or societal expectations, she sought solace in forgetfulness, with the promise that loss might become more bearable and pain lessened by remaining unspoken.
Beyond a personal tribute, the photographer explores the legacy derived from his grandmother’s experience with death.
In ” BAUME ” , Loris Theurillat intertwines depictions of life before and after death, confronting the fear of loss and disappearance. As death becomes inevitable, it seems to be gradually tamed, regaining its rightful place within life itself. By exposing it in a raw and unvarnished manner, he imbues the harshness of death with a soothing tenderness.
Through this photographic endeavour, Loris Theurillat aims to break the silence with imagery. While respecting unspeakable suffering, he offers the genesis of a renewed existence.
