you can't go home again, 2014 - 2024

In you can’t go home again, Antigoni Papantoni reflects on her experiences of the past decade, feeling like a sailor adrift between cultures, gradually losing her sense of belonging. This sense of disorientation inspired her to develop an intuitive, autobiographical photography practice that explores elusive concepts of home and identity. The book unfolds as a visual road movie, mirroring a journey from unfamiliarity to intimacy. It acts as a navigation guide through the challenging process of seeking a place of refuge – a haven to come home to.

Antigoni Papantoni

Antigonι Papantoni lives everywhere and nowhere. Born in Piraeus, she has been moving between Lausanne and Athens for years, often passing through Amsterdam and Doha. A graduate of the Vevey School of Photography, she draws on her personal experience to explore how the environment shapes an individual’s psychological experience. Her photographic practice, obsessive and prolific, has given rise to an extensive, almost anarchic personal archive.

you can’t go home again, her first photobook (Zoetrope), has traveled around the world, seeking inclusive versions of the concept of “home.” Her work in progress, KAIROS—winner of the near. prize 2025—will be presented at the Lenzburg Photofestival in Switzerland in 2026 and focuses on the unspoken forms of normalized violence.

At the same time, she works in the film industry, having gone through almost all the stages in the life of a film. When she grows up, she envisions a space in the Greek countryside where art, proximity to nature, and practices of meditation and disconnection form a community rather than elitism—an endeavor already being cultivated through the collective photography workshops she has been leading in Anafi since 2023.
